Designer brand Stella McCartney collaborates with Bolt Threads to promote eco-friendly fabrics

British designer Stella McCartney recently announced that it entered into a collaboration with the US biotech startups Bolt Threads, the two sides will work to promote environmentally friendly fashion innovation, to jointly develop the next generation of cutting-edge textiles.

Founded in 2009 and located in the Bay Area, Bolt Threads uses proteins found in nature to develop cleaner, environmentally friendly chemical processes and closed-production fibers. Bolt Threads can artificially reproduce the silk production process of insects and spiders, and produce high-performance silk , for example, machine washable, or longer than traditional silk. In March of this year, the company launched the first limited-edition tie made from the first synthetic spider silk on the market. As early as 2016, the company reached an environmental material development partnership with the outdoor sports brand Patagonia.

Stella McCartney himself said that this collaboration will combine its own relentless pursuit of sustainable materials and Bolt Threads' patent breakthrough in industrial biotechnology, representing a major change in the future of apparel production and even the entire fashion industry.

The brand pointed out that in the past decade, the fashion industry did not pay attention to Fabric innovation, but instead relied heavily on environmentally-friendly petrochemical products. Through this cooperation, both parties can jointly develop environmentally friendly fabrics that are harmless and friendly to vegetarians for the luxury goods industry. Dan Widmaier, co-founder and CEO of Bolt Threads, said: "From the first day we created Bolt Threads, we wanted to work with Stella McCartney. The first work by Stella McCartney and Bolt Threads will be a one-of-a-kind gold dress. This dress will be exhibited at the Design Exhibition "Items: Is Fashion Modern?" held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from October 1st to January 28th, 2018.

The two sides have not announced more details of the cooperation, Stella McCartney and its parent company, Kering, have no plans to invest in Bolt Threads.
